Make-up artists are designing and applying make-up on clients, including actors, models and performing artists and may work for beauty salons, beauty retail stores or entertainment production companies or be self-employed.

Even though a make-up artist does not have to have any formal education such as a high school diploma, or a a special make up professional license such as a cosmetologist license, it is recommended that they should have cosmetology or esthetics training and, if required by an employer, a cosmetologist license.

Business Licensing and Training Requirements and Recommendations

As mentioned, make-up artists are not required to be licensed or certified; however, some employers prefer to hire make-up artists with a cosmetology license. That means that if you are a self employed make-up artist, you will just need to get BUSINESS licensing as opposed to professional license such as a cosmetologist license.

Business legal requirements and tax rules require new make-up businessto select a business entity such as a sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation.
Licensing: If you will not choose to be a corporation or LLC, you will need to register your business name with a DBA, if it is not your personal full legal name.


 For example if you do business as your own name, e.g., Jane Doe, you do not need a DBA filing. On the other hand, if you are a self employed artist and you name your business "Make-up for the Stars," or something similar, you will need to file a dba.

Furthermore, selling make up products such as eyeliners and lipstick as merchandise requires a sales tax ID (Seller's Permit) to either buy or sell make up products wholesale and or sell them retail.

Suppose your make up artist business gets busy and you are hiring workers within 30 days of starting your business. That requires a federal EIN and a State EIN ( employer identification number).

You also need a federal tax ID if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, a corporation or an LLC.
